“I did not have to act in scenes which required me to run for cover because of an aerial attack or a bomb scare. I grew up under these circumstances in Afghanistan. Blackouts were common and bomb scares were normal for us.”

It is a natural correlation if I tell you that this is a quote of Vida Samadzai, former Miss Afghanistan who is currently trying to get a foothold in Hindi movies. It is normal to get used to bomb scares in the war and conflict-ridden country.

However, if you see a video clip of the function announcing the completion of her latest Hindi film Runway, you would find it difficult to believe that you were listening to Miss Afghanistan.

A revealing outfit that just about managed to cover the bare necessities and a thick American accent – it was very difficult to digest the fact that one was speaking to a lady from the land of Talibans.

But that is what defines Vida – expect the unexpected. A brave girl who is extremely confident and can carry herself well in every situation. But what made her decide on Bollywood?

“I have been watching Hindi movies right from my childhood. In fact, even during the Taliban regime when a lot of movies were banned we used to clandestinely gather at a friend’s place and watch these movies.

When I decided to make a career in showbiz, Bollywood was the obvious choice, ” says the tall and sensuous beauty queen.

Was it difficult to enter an industry where having a godfather is very important? “My ideas are very clear on this and I can proudly say that whatever films I have got on hand today are solely due to my hard work and talent.

I have never compromised and never will. I don’t believe a Sugar Daddy can take you very far. He can give you a break or two, but beyond that it is just your talent and hard work that matters, ” says the strong-willed actress.

Was she always interested in acting? How did she prepare herself for facing the camera? “I was always interested in acting and decided to take it up seriously after winning the beauty paegeant.

The challenge I faced then and am still facing is with the language. While I can understand Hindi very well, when it comes to speaking I am not that confident.

I speak Hindi with an accent and am aware of it. I am taking special classes to learn Hindi. However, because of my hectic traveling schedules my teachers are finding it difficult to maintain continuity.

I am trying to make up for my missed classes by speaking to people in Hindi to the extent possible, ” says Vida with a smile on her face. The beauty-queen-turned-actress speaks five languages – Parsi, Phustu, Urdu, Hindi and English.

Vida was first seen in Mukta Arts’ Black and White as a runaway Afghan girl.

“It was a fantastic experience working with legends like Subhash Ghai and Anil Kapoor. Though I had a very small role, I learned a lot from Mr Ghai.

And Anil is such a thorough gentleman. He always used to talk about his family during breaks, ” remember Vida whose second movie Dhoom Dharaka didn’t create too much of a ripple in the Box Office. “In Dhoom Dharaka I played myself. In fact it is a guest role and it was fun working with this unit.”

Vida has a lot of expectations from her new film – Runway. “It was a lot of hard work and I have a very significant role there. I hope people will accept me well in this movie!” says Vida who dreams of working with famous directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rakesh Roshan and Subhash Ghai.

Any preference for actors? “Yes of course! I would love to act with Hrithik Roshan. He is so tall and handsome!

But that does not mean I would not like to work with other actors – I would be obliged if I get a chance to work with personalities like Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. It would be like my dream come true, ” says the pretty face.

A Hong Kong computer technician appeared in court Friday denying charges of stealing the sexy photographs from the computer of pop star Edison Chen which were posted and circulated on the internet.

Sze Ho-chun, 23, entered a not guilty plea to charges of dishonest use of a computer. It is alleged Sze copied the images showing Chen and several young starlets semi-naked or in sexually provocative poses from Chen’s computer while it was being repaired.

The images later appeared on the internet where they view by millions of people, sparking one of the biggest scandals in Hong Kong entertainment history and fuelling a debate on internet freedom. A second man, clerk Kwok Chun-wai, 24, has already appeared in court accused of posting internet hyperlinks directing people to a website from which they could download the photos.

Actor and pop star Chen, 27, last month apologized to the women involved, who included Twins singer Gillian Chung and other so-called Canto-pop starlets, and announced he was giving up his show business career. Magistrates in court on Friday, agreed to extend Sze’s bail until a pre-trial review next month.

Asked about talk in Hong Kong that the duo will disband, Charlene stressed: Twins ‘will never break up’.

‘We’re friends forever,’ she added.

Of the difficult last two months since the scandal broke, Charlene said: ‘Every day you’ll grow. What won’t kill you only makes you stronger.’

But, she revealed: ‘I do wish to go back to the more innocent days.’

Her answers came from within a wall of minders and five large men who surrounded her when she met the media just before a Heroic Rendezvous fashion show at a local club.

Before the press conference, we were told, if possible, ‘don’t ask sensitive questions’.

They were determined to protect her from being the Edison scandal’s collateral damage.

But it was not as if Charlene had anything to worry about.

She took pains to talk about her partner, sharing little nuggets.

‘When we were starting out and we didn’t have money, Ah Jiao and I would design our own clothes and share them,’ she said.

‘I like the cartoon characters from Heroic Rendezvous - they look like AhJiao and me.’

Asked what Twins planned to do, Charlene revealed she is waiting for her partner to return from extended leave.

‘We were midway into the recording of our new album but AhJiao is now on leave.’

As to when they’ll be back in the studios to complete the album, Charlene replied: ‘I don’t know too. I hope it’s as soon as possible.’

UPCOMING MOVIES

She is preparing to film two movies in the next month - a sequel to Storm Riders II (with Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok) in Thailand and another action movie in Shanghai.

She said she is used to being solo while acting; but it does get lonely when it comes to the other engagements.

‘When I’m doing music-related things, it feels strange to be standing on stage alone.’

It seems that not only are the people with Charlene determined to protect her, her fans are too.

It was tough not to spot the 40 odd members of Twins Alliance Singapore. They were dressed in lime-green T-shirts and holding placards.

The three-year-old club has about 100 members.

Ms Adeline Wee, 25, an accounts executive, gushed about her idol.

‘She is well mannered, very lively and very sincere.’

But mention the Edison scandal and she had the ready reply: ‘It’s over and we won’t talk about it.’

Another member, Edmund, who refused to reveal his surname or his age, said: ‘It’s a private matter and I have nothing to say.’

It is understandable why the fans are devoted to Charlene and Gillian.

Just before the fashion show started, a member of the fan club came running to the other members excitedly, holding in her hands, ‘a note from Charlene!’

Then came the urgent whispers: ‘And she said to keep it private.’

But that fan wasn’t very good at concealing the note. While they turned towards Charlene - seated in a balcony above them - to scream their thanks, the fan accidentally turned the paper around.

Let’s just say the brief note, which was handwritten in English, thanked the fans for their support.

The note elicited more squeals of appreciation and prompted them to wave the placards with boosted energy.

But not everyone was taken in by the Choi charm.

Retiree Johnny Yap insisted he was not a fan.

‘I’m here only to check out the disco and for the ang mo (Caucasian) models,’ he proclaimed, although I saw him grinning from ear to ear when Charlene was on stage.

‘I don’t even like her. I hope Edison didn’t have a thing with her too!’

Actor Maggie Q dropped Out of Movie Three Kingdoms Promotion for her greed. Maggie Q was to come to HK for movie promo, though it was only a short 3 days, just the lodging, transport, clothing, & food she negotiated for a month with the movie company.

She & her entourage together with her manager other than the usual demands, such as first class air ticket, has included many other unreasonable demands, for example 5 star hotels, 24 hr bodyguard, a low rough estimate it will cost at least $250,000 in 3 days!

Other than HK, Maggie Q has to go to China, TW & Korea, she again asks for a lot of things.

For mainland, most movie promo has to go to different provinces, from BJ to Shanghai, Guangzhou & others, but Maggie Q stipulated that she will go to only one of the places, this gives headache to the local movie company!

For Taiwan, Maggie Q also asked for top class treatment, if her demands were met, the expenditure will hit NT 1 million (about $250,000)

TW movie industry is hitting is downturn, box office is always far from ideal, in addition, Maggie Q is not the important actress, she has no box office guarantee, so the concerned party does not concede to her demands.

Also, she said she will not take on Edison Chen sex scandal or respond to the scandal on the ’suspected?nude photos’! But these are must-ask questions of the reporters, the movie company finds it too difficult to handle!

After discussion, all the movie companies decided not to use Maggie Q for movie promo in Asia, the reporter on this confirmed with the company in HK, who disclosed that M Q will not be in HK for any promo activity, & admitted they cannot meet her demands.

The movie company too will have some losses such as booking of air tickets & lodging!

Is it a pity that she cannot come to HK? SunBeam company indicated, “A pity, but there is male lead Andy Lau, this is enough, Andy himself is a box office guarantee, in addition, ROTD is a movie of substance, so we are not worried!”

Maggie Q gives the excuse that she has movie commitments in NY & has no time to come to HK.

Good for the movie companies for not bending over for MQ!!! To be honest I liked MQ (emphasize “liked”) but after reading this story I have grown a sudden distaste for her. I can’t stand how actors develop this sense of self entitlement just because they are in a few films. This must be a joke. Maggie Q is hardly considered an “International Star”. She is barely known in the states and is only B list at most in Asia. Who does she think she is making these kind of demads here? Sure, maybe in the States she could get away with this kind of stuff since movies like MI3 are multi million dollar investments (but even then I think only Tom Cruise would get this kind of treatment.), but budgets for asian movies are significantly smaller, so they have less money to fritter away on ridiculous demands. She needs to remember that she got to where she is today because she got her start in acting in Asia. If she would have went straight to Hollywood to begin with she would probably be just another nobody today. She should be grateful and not bite the hand that feeds her.

Well she has been in a few big films in the US, (Die Hard?!?!) and quite frankly, $250,000 is chicken feed to a studio company. People in the US will still recognise her over the likes of Andy Lau - and THAT is where the big money is, not in little Hong Kong.

I don’t think shes gorgeous and I don’t think she can act either, but this sort of demanding goes on all the time, I don’t see why people should pick on her. I’m sure none of her co-stars are staying at 2 start hotels and eating bread with water.

Hard to say if she actually made all those demands or not but she is probably happy if whatever she asked for got her excluded from the promo tour. Actors hate doing promotions–most of them barely recall the movie they are pushing–few if any have actually watched the movie, since by the time the editing and post-production stuff was done they were working on something else.

Telling an actor that they won’t be touring in support of a movie is something most of them would welcome. That they come off as pleased to be doing so–especially the seemingly necessary stuff about “what a great shoot it was and how we all look forward to working together again” simply shows that they are good at what they do, which is acting.

i guess the magazine i read was accurate when it said that b list actresses are much bitchier than a list actresses. a long time stylist said when she was helping the actresses she witnessed a lot more attitude coming from b list actresses because they want to be popular so badly along with sharing the same “privileges” of bossing ppl around. although it’s really hard in that industry, but i don’t think even a list actresses/actors have the “privilege” of bossing anyone around. the ppl around you are those that either make or break your career. if your demands are too much, they can always chose someone else over you. if she really wants to make it onto the a list, then she’ll have to learn a little something called respect and humbleness.
